Marcus Rashford speaks openly about Manchester United future
Marcus Rashford has spoken about his future at Manchester United.
A wonder goal against Chelsea, chopping inside and scoring against Liverpool, and numerous special moments in the Champions League are some of my favourite highlights of Marcus Rashford.
This week the English international sat down with journalist Henry Winter to discuss his footballing future. Media outlets have speculated heavily about whether he would stay at United. But when the news broke he wanted to leave Manchester it caused an online stir.
Fans gave multiple opinions about his interview with Winter: some were happy, and others lamented about his intention to depart the club.
Staying or Going?
Personally, the scenario is bitter-sweet.
Rashford has given the fans numerous great moments. Yet it’s obvious he isn’t happy playing football.
The 27-year-old has lost a yard of pace in the past couple of years. The fast-agile player which many fans knew about has become slow and one dimensional.
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim doesn’t play with wingers, meaning he would have to play as a left-attacking midfielder or a striker. Two positions he can’t play.
The news reminds me of another United legend.
When Wayne Rooney threatened to leave the club it was a similar situation. Both players have clout at the club. However, Rooney was United’s star player, while Rashford has struggled to deal with purple patch form. Secondly, despite losing pace; Rooney could easily play as a central-attacking midfielder and Rashford can’t.
Future Scenarios
The club must have a backup plan if Rashford leaves.
United intends to sell him during the January transfer window or the summer period.
Journalist, Fabrizio Romano, has reported United’s dream replacement for Rashford would be Nico Williams from Athletic Club.
The 22-year-old has managed one goal in 16 games for Athletic this season in La Liga. Williams’ best season happened last year in the 2023-2024 La Liga campaign; he racked up five goals and 11 assists in 31 games.
If United buy Williams they are investing their money in an up-and-coming talent. Knowing if he will hit the ground running is going to be hard. Moreover, I think there are more critical areas the club needs to invest such as the left-back position.
Potential Buyer
Finding a buyer for Rashford will be hard.
Who is going to pay more than £300,000 a week for him? The only two scenarios I could see happening are Rashford leaving for a season loan or being sold.
A sunny trip to a club such as Barcelona may be difficult, especially because of their financial situation. While Paris Saint-Germain could be another option.
Rashford departing for a club in Saudi Arabia isn’t something that will happen. Especially, when he has publicly said he wants to play with England in the upcoming World Cup. Only time will tell where he will be playing next.

Nico Williams doesn’t fit this system any better than Garnacho does. We need an inverted winger of a full on cam. My pick is Alex Baena at Villarreal
